Recently I performed oral sex on a boy, we did not use protection and a week after my throat started to burn. My glands are swollen as well as most of my throat, my neck is sore, and I’ve had a mild fever. I got tested for strep throat and it came back negative, for fear of my mom finding out I didn’t say anything but now I worry that it’s an oral STD. I’m scared of what to do, I have a friend willing to drive me to a clinic, and I just want to know what to do and where to go from here? Please respond because I’m scared, as I’m sure we all having to deal with such issues from our mistakes. Thank you so much.

It sounds like your throat problem could be a number of different things, including a sexually transmitted infection. But we can’t diagnose you over the Internet. You should schedule an appointment at your local Planned Parenthood health center, where you can be open about your fears and a health care provider can tell you exactly what’s going on and what your next steps should be.

A lot of people think that oral sex is safer than anal or vaginal intercourse. That’s true when it comes to HIV, but oral sex can spread other infections, like herpes, syphilis, and hepatitis B. Condoms and other barriers can make oral sex safer.
