Did you know that simply by being a supporter of Planned Parenthood, you can influence the decisions of multi-million dollar organizations?
Individual donations are a primary source of Planned Parenthood support, but donations also come from organizations in the form of grants. Many larger organizations look at the number of our individual supporters as a key indicator when choosing to award grants!
In 2021, the PPGNHAIK grants team secured $1,590,594 in funding from private, government, and corporate grants. This is in no small part thanks to your support.
Alison Ludwig and Steven Conrad make up the Institutional Giving team at PPGNHAIK, and together they apply for over 220 grants per year – not counting federal grants, which are handled by Nika Graci, Federal Programs Manager.
The majority of these grants come from private foundations, Conrad said, and many others come from PPFA. “We have had recent success securing PPFA grants for community organizing in all our states, relationship building with Latino/x organizations in Indiana and Kentucky, new health center equipment in several locations, and enhancements for educational programs like Spark*ED,” he said.
The affiliate also receives government grant funding, on both the state and federal level.
“Within PPGNHAIK’s service area, state-administered grant opportunities are more common in Washington and Hawai’i,” Conrad said. “For example, we secured a grant from the Washington Department of Health last year for IN•clued.”
Federal grant work has mostly been focused on re-securing Title X funding, in which great strides have been made. Be sure to stay tuned to Access news for updates in that arena.
“Corporate foundations are another important avenue of support,” Conrad said. PPGNHAIK has received two different grants totaling $90,000 the past two years from one pharmaceutical company, which helps the affiliate provide lower-cost contraceptives for patients in need.
The affiliate also receives some support from faith-based congregations that make annual contributions to their respective community’s local health center.
In addition to applying for money, careful stewardship and organization is another important aspect of grant work at the PPGNHAIK affiliate.
“We receive a lot of grants that are restricted to a certain geographic area, such as funding from a community foundation, and a lot of grants that are restricted to a certain project or program, such as patient financial assistance. Often, grants have both geographic and programmatic restrictions,” Conrad explained.
Conrad, Ludwig and Graci frequently partner with Education and Clinical Services teams to secure and implement grants. It is one aspect of fundraising that touches the organization cross-departmentally, and is in turn impacted by the individual actions, participation, and donations of supporters.
