Planned Parenthood Keystone Issues Statement on Federal Mifepristone Court Case Decision
For Immediate Release: April 10, 2023
The national abortion crisis we find ourselves in worsens and abortion options may become even more restricted. A federal court in Amarillo, Texas suspended the FDA ‘s approval of mifepristone (mife), the first of a two-part regimen used for a medication abortion. Access to mifepristone will remain intact until at least April 14.
Despite mifepristone being FDA approved and safely administered for over twenty years, this ruling threatens abortion options in our country - where 1 in 3 women of reproductive age, and even more trans and non-binary people, no longer have access to abortion in their state.
“This deeply harmful and cruel ruling exposes the weaponization of our judicial system. The ruling is politically motivated by anti-abortion extremists who are actively working to erode access to sexual and reproductive health care. It does not matter what state you live in, the court’s ruling to block mifepristone - used in half of all abortion care - will severely limit access. But let’s be clear: Planned Parenthood Keystone will continue to offer medication and procedural abortion. Abortion remains safe and legal in Pennsylvania.” stated Melissa Reed, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Keystone.
Medication abortion and procedural abortion are still abortion care options at Planned Parenthood Keystone. Planned Parenthood Keystone will evaluate our protocols and shift to a misoprostol-only medication abortion regimen, if necessary. Our providers are experts in the field and will continue to work with patients to provide the care that they need as they’ve always done.
