PHOENIX – Dr. Jill Gibson, Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood Arizona, released the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court of the United States’ decision to dismiss the consolidated cases raising the question of whether Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), a federal law that ensures people in medical emergencies get the care they need, supersedes state abortion bans.

“Let’s be clear: the Supreme Court had the opportunity to protect emergency abortion care, and they chose not to and instead kicked the can down the road. The health and lives of Arizonans are still at risk under our state’s abortion ban, and access to emergency care for pregnant people across the country remains threatened. When pregnant people find themselves in a medical emergency, they must be able to get the care they need — including abortion.

The fight for true reproductive freedom in Arizona and across the country is far from over. Planned Parenthood Arizona remains committed to doing everything in our power to ensure every Arizonan has the right to make their own decisions about our bodies, our lives, and our futures.”
