PHOENIX – Dr. Jill Gibson, Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood Arizona, released the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court of the United States’ decision to reject the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine’s unfounded attack on mifepristone on the basis of plaintiff standing, allowing mifepristone to remain legal.

“Today’s decision from the US Supreme Court allows mifepristone — a safe and effective component of medication abortion — to remain FDA approved and available without additional restrictions. In Arizona, patients will continue to have a choice in their abortion care, and medication abortion will continue to be legal and available, including at Planned Parenthood Arizona’s health centers.

While this is a win, the Supreme Court did the bare minimum by rejecting this case on standing, and it should never have been at the court to begin with. The attacks brought before the Supreme Court were not based on science or for patient safety. This case was brought forward only to advance the political agenda of the same anti-abortion groups who urged the Arizona Supreme Court to enforce a total abortion ban on our communities.

Even with today’s ruling, our fight is not over. Another case that could further diminish our reproductive freedom will be decided by the Supreme Court in the coming weeks. Planned Parenthood Arizona will continue to advocate for all Arizonans’ freedom to control their own bodies, including access to safe, legal abortion. ”
