June 24 marked two years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and ended federal protections for abortion. In that time, we’ve watched anti-abortion extremists and politicians strategically attack care on every front. We know this is not about safety – this is about control over our bodies, our lives, and our futures. They’ve banned abortion in 22 states, they’ve used the courts to attack access and victimize patients and providers, and they’ve worked to strip access to care from the most marginalized people in our communities.
As heartbreaking as the loss of Roe was, we know that the right to an abortion has never been enough to access care – and we are working together every day to make sure that everyone can get the care they need. These attacks have been devastating, but we have been fighting back.
- SCOTUS shut down an attempt at rolling back the FDA’s 20-year approval of Mifepristone.
- Courts in New York rejected Assemblymember Marjorie Byrnes’ challenge to the ERA/Prop One and it is confirmed that New Yorkers will have the opportunity to enshrine the right to abortion in our state constitution in November.
- We have seen the first over-the-counter oral contraceptive hit stores.
- We have seen access to emergency contraception expand in communities and on campuses.
- We are acting tirelessly as a beacon of access and care for people in restricted states across the country and here in our own communities.
This fight feels overwhelming at times, but every PPCWNY staff person and supporter is responsible for the wins we have seen in the face of hardship, and the wins that are still coming.
We are so grateful to be in this together, fighting for care, no matter what.
