Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood Great Plains Continues Use of Safe Medication in Abortion Care Following Unanimous Supreme Court Ruling to Strike Down Challenge to Mifepristone

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the challenge to the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone brought by a group of anti-abortion doctors lacked legal standing, allowing for continued access and use of the medication across the country. Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood Great Plains will continue to offer medication abortion using mifepristone as part of a safe, effective two-drug regimen at its Kansas health centers. 

First approved more than 20 years ago, mifepristone is one of two medications commonly used in medication abortion care in the United States. Medication abortion has a safety record of over 99 percent, according to the CDC. Mifepristone has been used by more than five million people in the United States. Limitations and restrictions on access to medication abortion using mifepristone serve no medical purpose, provide no benefit to patients, and are politically motivated to restrict access to safe abortion.

"The Supreme Court affirmed the most basic principle of the American legal system today: hypothetical scenarios don’t make for actual legal claims. Anti-abortion activists tried and failed to block patients from exercising their rights even in states where abortion remains legal. We know this fight isn’t over and that attempts to prevent care and stigmatize patients will continue, but it’s a relief to know that we can continue to provide medication abortion the way it has been offered for years: safely, effectively, and without out-of-state activists dictating care here at home."
