For Immediate Release: June 30, 2020 (Updated: June 30, 2020, noon)
New York – Today, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York is thrilled to announce “Summer of Pride” - a celebration of LGBTQ resilience, history, and triumphs. PPGNY is extending Pride beyond June to further center the needs and stories of LGBTQ New Yorkers who face insurmountable challenges caused by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, hateful violence against transgender people, and over-policing and police brutality.
During our Summer of Pride, PPGNY’s LGBTQ Health & Wellness Program, Out for Health, will host five LGBTQ Lunch & Learn webinars. Our LGBTQ Lunch & Learn series will be virtual, live webinars that offer vital resources to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people in the fight for full equality — many of whom turn to Planned Parenthood of Greater New York for health care, information, and education. We are grateful to be working in partnership with the Ithaca College LGBT Center to host these events.
While LGBTQ communities have historically shown us the power of resistance, their ability to access health care, raise their families, and live their most authentic lives is under continued attack. The attacks are heightened for Black LGBTQ people who still face oppression and violence at the intersections of racism, homophobia, and transphobia — as we’ve seen in recent weeks as America mourns Black lives lost to police and racial violence. And, while all transgender women of color are more marginalized than their peers, we must begin by addressing Black Trans Women & Black Trans Femmes because of the urgent need to end the epidemic of anti-transgender and anti-Black violence.
Statement from Maureen Kelly, Associate Vice President of Access & Support Services, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York:
“Planned Parenthood of Greater New York and Out for Health stands proud with LGBTQ New Yorkers 365 days of the year. This summer, it is especially important that we join efforts to stand up, push forward, and organize for change. Everyone deserves to live a life free from fear, shame, and stigma. At PPGNY and Out for Health, we are proud to work every day to continue to build communities of care and support that affirms and recognizes you for who you are and who you love. Summer of Pride is more than a seasonal celebration, it is our unwavering commitment in our long and continued fight for our fundamental human rights to exist, thrive, and love.
