PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF GREATER NEW YORK: MIFEPRISTONE ACCESS IS SAFE TODAY, BUT THE FIGHT FOR ABORTION ACCESS CONTINUES
For Immediate Release: June 13, 2024
NEW YORK, NY – This morning, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled a group of doctors lacked legal standing to challenge the Food and Drug Administration's regulation of the abortion pill mifepristone, keeping the status quo on the medication. This means abortion providers and patients can continue to prescribe and utilize mifepristone as needed.
The Supreme Court said that the abortion pill mifepristone would remain widely available for now, delaying the potential for a swift end to widespread availability of this medication that is used in more than half of abortions in the country.
Statement from Wendy Stark, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York:
Today’s decision reaffirms what we always knew to be true: mifepristone is a safe and effective option for abortion and medical treatment of miscarriage. While we can breathe a sigh of relief today, we know the fight for our bodily autonomy and widespread access to abortion care is far from over. Anti-abortion actors are strategically working to all out ban abortion in every state. Everyone deserves the ability to make decisions about their own reproductive lives and futures, including choosing the method of abortion that works best for them. At Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, our patients’ access to care remains unaffected today, and our doors are open to all.
“Here in New York, we must do all we can to safeguard our right to bodily autonomy, and there is a critical opportunity to do that in November with the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. The NY ERA would explicitly prohibit discrimination by the government based on a person's ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex – including sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression – in addition to pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes - no matter what.
