Planned Parenthood Commemorates Transgender Day of Remembrance
For Immediate Release: Nov. 20, 2017
COLUMBUS, OH — Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio commemorates Transgender Day of Remembrance, honoring those individuals in Ohio and around the world whose lives have been lost to anti-transgender violence. There have been 26 trans murders this year in the United States, including Jojo Striker and Pepper K in Ohio. Around the world, one transgender person is murdered every three days. Planned Parenthood supports all individuals in the pursuit of their true identity and condemns violence against anyone striving to be their authentic self.
More than ever, transgender people — especially trans women of color — need support, resources, and solidarity. Planned Parenthood believes that reproductive rights are deeply connected to LGBTQ rights, and are a proud provider for so many in the LGBTQ community. Planned Parenthood cares passionately about helping everyone lead the healthiest lives possible, no matter who they are or where they live and stands with transgender and gender nonconforming people.
Statement from Lillian Williams, PPGOH Vice President of Health Services:
“Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio believes that all people deserve high-quality, affordable health care, no matter who they are. We are committed to improving the way transgender people receive health care at our health centers, and our doors are open to everyone.
“Our goal, every day, is to make each person who comes through our doors feel welcome, comfortable, and cared for while providing the best possible care in a compassionate and nonjudgmental environment.”
Transgender people, like everyone else, have a fundamental need for quality health care, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The unfortunate reality is that, in addition to the economic and geographic barriers many people face when seeking health care, transgender people face additional, unique challenges when it comes to getting the care they need. Planned Parenthood is dedicated to ensuring every community throughout Ohio leads happy, healthy lives.
Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio (PPGOH) operates 19 health centers, and offers services including birth control counseling, vital cancer screenings, well-woman exams, and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment. PPGOH offers services regardless of a patient’s economic level, race, gender, sexual orientation, and/or immigration status.
