Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio Announces New Chief Medical Officer
For Immediate Release: July 23, 2024
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio (PPGOH) announced this week that Dr. Bhavik Kumar has been appointed Chief Medical Officer. He will oversee the medical providers and health care centers that serve more than 60,000 patients. Dr. Adarsh Krishen, PPGOH’s Chief Medical Officer since 2017, announced his planned retirement this week.
Dr. Kumar has served as a medical director for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana for more than 5 years. He will continue to support that affiliate while assuming this new role at PPGOH with almost a decade of experience providing care and advocating for patients seeking comprehensive primary care, gender-affirming care, abortion care, and other family planning services.
“I’m honored to take on this new role at a moment when Ohioans have reaffirmed their right to abortion care and as Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio continues to expand our work to support all members of our community in accessing the health care they need. Whether it’s gender-affirming care, abortion services, or virtual health care, PPGOH’s health centers will continue to provide our patients with the highest standard of care, regardless of their background,” said Dr. Bhavik Kumar, incoming Chief Medical Officer of PPGOH. “I thank Dr. Krishen for his leadership of PPGOH over the last several years and look forward to his continued support as I begin my tenure.”
Dr. Kumar has served thousands of people seeking abortion care in several states including Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, and has provided care as a staff physician at PPGOH Bedford Heights Health Center for over a year. He has also devoted time to research on abortion access within the United States, focusing on the implications of restrictive state abortion policies, giving him the proper background and knowledge as he comes into this important role with PPGOH. Dr. Kumar completed medical school at Texas Tech University HSC, residency training in Family & Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, and a Fellowship in Family Planning at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, NY. Kumar has been an outspoken advocate for abortion and trans care access in both the media and the courts. He currently serves on the board of the Society of Family Planning (SFP).
“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Kumar as our new Chief Medical Officer and know that he will continue to provide the same care and compassion for our patients that he has shown throughout his time with Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio,” said Erica Wilson-Domer, President and CEO of PPGOH. “As our dear friend and colleague Dr. Krishen retires, we thank him for his decades of service with Planned Parenthood in a board and staff capacity, and all he has done to ensure Ohioans have access to the life-saving health care they need.”
