COLUMBUS, Ohio — On August 29, 2024, the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas delivered a pivotal victory for reproductive rights by granting a preliminary injunction blocking a state law that prevents advanced practice clinicians from administering medication abortion.
The preliminary injunction also blocked Ohio’s requirement that providers use the outdated medication abortion regimen contained in the FDA label for mifepristone. As a result, medication abortion is now available in Ohio beyond 10 weeks of pregnancy. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region, Preterm-Cleveland, Women’s Med Group Professional Corporation, Dr. Sharon Liner, and Julia Quinn.
Dr. Bhavik Kumar, Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, released the following statement:
“This preliminary injunction is a critical step in ensuring all people in Ohio can continue accessing the care they deserve, including continuing to protect access to reproductive rights after they overwhelmingly voted in support of Issue 1 last year. We must continue to build on this success, reducing barriers that prevent many people in our state from accessing the reproductive care they need. By blocking the ban on advanced practice clinicians from providing medication abortion, we are better able to serve our patients, who can receive the health care they need and deserve.”
Erica Wilson-Domer, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, released the following statement:
"Patients deserve access to the medication they need, and thanks to this injunction, providers can continue caring for their patients without unnecessary interference. Abortion, including medication abortion, is legal and constitutionally protected in Ohio, thanks to Ohioans who came together to vote in favor of Issue 1 last year. Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio remains dedicated to ensuring that patients can access the abortion method of their choice, receive the compassionate care they deserve, and return to their lives as soon as possible.”
