Trans Care

Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast is proud to offer expert, compassionate health care services for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming patients.

We're here for you. No matter what.

For far too many in the transgender community, high-quality, nonjudgmental, and culturally competent health care is hard to find. Providing gender-affirming hormone therapy aligns with our mission of enabling all people to make empowered, informed decisions about their bodies and lives.

PPGC proudly provides family planning services and sexual and reproductive health care to patients of all gender identities in all 8 of our health centers. Gender-affirming hormone therapy is available for patients 18+ at our New Orleans health center and via telehealth in both Texas and Louisiana.

What to Expect When You Come In

When you check in, you will be asked to provide your name and pronouns. For security, all patients are required to present an ID, and we understand that your name and the name on your ID may not match.

At your initial visit, your clinician will discuss with you the informed consent process, your complete medical history, and will review both the positive effects and possible risk factors for hormone therapy. After reviewing your history, the clinician will perform routine lab work to make sure you are a healthy candidate for hormone therapy.

What is gender-affirming hormone therapy?

Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) is one way for transgender individuals to feel and look more like the gender with which they identify. GAHT is a component of a medical transition which is used to change the body’s endocrine system to more closely match the person’s gender identity. GAHT can include feminizing therapies with testosterone-blocking agents (or anti-androgens) along with hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, or masculinizing therapy with forms of testosterone.

Where do you offer GAHT?

We currently offer gender-affirming hormone therapy for patients ages 18+ in our New Orleans health center and virtually via telehealth in both Texas and Louisiana. If you are already on hormone therapy, you can come to PPGC for ongoing care and monitoring.

Do I need a letter from my therapist/provider to receive GAHT?

PPGC follows an informed consent treatment model, which means our patients will not be required to provide an approval letter from a therapist or other health care provider to begin hormone therapy.

What is the timeline for receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy?

If you are medically eligible, Planned Parenthood staff may be able to start hormone therapy as early as the first visit. You and your clinician will discuss your transition goals, medical history, and other considerations to determine the treatment plan that’s best for you.

What happens after I start receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy?

In order to continue receiving hormone therapy, you will need to schedule periodic appointments at Planned Parenthood for routine lab work and monitoring. Your clinician will determine the best follow-up schedule based upon your needs. Reaching your individualized transition goals will be a gradual process, and your clinician will discuss in-depth what that may look like.

What other services do you offer?

Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast is proud to be your full-spectrum sexual and reproductive health care provider. In addition to hormone therapy, we offer a range of services for people of all gender identities, including birth control, STI testing and treatment, annual exams, HIV testing and prevention (e.g. PrEP and nPEP), clinical breast and chest exams, cervical cancer screenings, pregnancy-related services (pregnancy testing, ultrasounds for pregnancy dating, miscarriage management, options counseling, pre- and post-abortion care), vasectomies, primary care, out-of-state abortion navigation, and more.

Read why patients trust PPGC with their care:

“Being transgender, it is really difficult finding a doctor or doctor’s office that listens to me and my experience. Planned Parenthood has always been reliable and made my appointments comfortable.

“I am so grateful for Planned Parenthood. I get the majority of my health care here because I love the staff and the ease of making/experiencing appointments. I am a trans man, and Planned Parenthood has always been so respectful to me and always made me feel like I belong.

“I know y’all see a lot of trans people, but holy crap was my visit so affirming! Everyone called me MY name. No one batted an eye. I just felt…normal.

“Planned Parenthood has provided years of accessible, low-cost gender-affirming care and a supportive, trans-friendly environment for gynecological care I would otherwise be reluctant to keep up with.”

“Planned Parenthood helped me by being a place that allows me to transition without worry of judgment or repercussion.”

“The only time that I didn’t use Planned Parenthood for these services was when I lived in another state that didn’t allow telehealth visits for this kind of care and the nearest center was over two hours away. I returned to Planned Parenthood as soon as I moved back. For affordable gender-affirming health care, Planned Parenthood is easily one of the most trusted.”
