For Immediate Release: Sept. 23, 2024 (Updated: Sept. 23, 2024, 7:31 p.m.)
Expanding access increases abortion care services by 11% in Central Illinois
PEORIA, Ill. - Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) is proud to announce it has expanded abortion services at the Peoria Health Center to include procedural abortion care in addition to medication abortion care. Now patients can access the full range of abortion options at the newly renovated Peoria Health Center, 2709 W. Knoxville Ave., Peoria, Illinois. This change will increase access to abortion care by 11% in Central Illinois.
"We are continually striving to ensure our patients have access to the care they need and deserve,” said Dr. Amy Whitaker, Chief Medical Officer of PPIL. “When we renovated Peoria after it was attacked, we purposefully designed it with flexibility in mind so we can expand our care options as needed. Since PPIL continues to see a flood of patients needing care in central Illinois we are proud to now offer the full spectrum of abortion care in Peoria.”
In early 2023, the Peoria health center suffered more than $1 million in smoke and fire damage from a firebombing and took over a year to rebuild. The 4,289-square-foot Peoria Health Center’s layout has been repurposed to optimize patient care.
The Peoria Health Center attack is part of an ongoing trend of violence and arson against abortion providers since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. According to the National Abortion Federation, arson attacks have increased by 100%. In January 2023, the arsonist was arrested and pleaded guilty to the attack. He was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of $1,450,000 for malicious use of fire and an explosive to damage and attempt to damage the Peoria Health Center.
In addition to now offering the full spectrum of abortion care, the Peoria Health Center offers gender-affirming care, STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings, HIV testing, birth control, and medication abortion care.
