frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between an STD and an STI?

The terms STD (sexually transmitted disease) and STI (sexually transmitted infection) are often used interchangeably. Both terms refer to infections that can spread from one person to another, usually during sexual activity.

Does Planned Parenthood offer free STD testing?

We offer low-to-no cost ($0) testing and treatment, depending on factors like family size and income. If you’re worried about cost, check in with us to see how we can help you get STD testing that fits your budget. Whether you have health insurance or not, Planned Parenthood can help you get the care you need. To learn more about our insurance and payment options, click here.

Which STDs should I get tested for?

There is no single test for every STD.

Different STDs can be found using different kinds of tests. You and your health care provider will determine what STDs you should get tested for and which tests make the most sense for you.

Different Types of STD Tests:

  • Blood Test (Finger and/or tube)

  • Urine Test

  • Swab Test (vagina, throat, and/or rectum)

  • Physical Examination

How long does it take to get STD test results back from Planned Parenthood?

At PPPSGV, you can receive your HIV results within 20 minutes before your appointment is over. For all other STD tests, results can take anywhere between 3-7 days. Results will be available in your patient portal. Our Care Team is available to discuss your results with you Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.

How soon after unprotected sex should I test for STDs?

If you are not having any symptoms, 2 weeks. If you have symptoms, you should get tested right away. If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV and/or other STDs, we can prescribe PEP and/or DoxyPEP within 72 hours of exposure to significantly reduce your risk of infection.

Any follow up testing after that will be discussed with your provider.

How do I know if I have an STD? What are the symptoms?

Getting tested is the only way to know for sure if you have an STD.

Some people experience symptoms and others do not. Some examples of symptoms a person can experience:

  • Abnormal discharge (color and/or odor) from the penis or vagina

  • Pain/burning while urinating

  • Genital itching/irritation.

  • Bumps, sores and/or warts on the genitals

  • Skin rashes

  • Pelvic pain

  • Fever-like symptoms

What are the odds of getting an STD if your sexual partner has one?

There is no exact percentage. The chance of getting an STD from a partner who has one varies depending on factors like the type of STD, if protection is used, and your sexual behaviors.  To reduce the risk, it's important to practice safe sex, open communication between partners, and get tested regularly.

What do I do if I test positive for an STD?

If you test positive for an STD, we will contact you to inform you of your status and next steps. What happens next will depend on the type of STD you have. Your treatment plan might consist of pills by mouth, an injection, or a medicated skin cream. You’ll also want to inform your sexual partner(s) so they know to get tested.

Remember that STDs don’t define you, so be sure to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Can I get an STD through oral sex?

Yes, some STDs can spread through oral sex. We offer testing (by throat swab) for anyone who is engaging in oral sex.
