(New Haven, Conn.) – June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month and marks 45 years since the 1969 Stonewall Riots — the event that sparked what is now often referred to as the modern LGBTQ (Queer) rights movement. Planned Parenthood of Southern New England (PPSNE) is proud to reaffirm its commitment to the rights and health of LGBTQ people.

“Planned Parenthood of Southern New England believes that reproductive rights are deeply connected to civil rights for all Americans,” said Jenny Carrillo, PhD, Senior Vice President of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. “We continue to stand with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people in the struggle for full equality — many of whom turn to Planned Parenthood for health care, information and education in Connecticut and Rhode Island.”

Planned Parenthood is open to everyone and meets the needs of members of the LGBTQ community. Routine visits with a PPSNE provider helps prevent illnesses and finds problems that may need treatment. Planned Parenthood provides sensitive and accurate information, education, and resources on sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity to youth, parents, men and women, and members of the LGBTQ community of all ages every day.

“We believe in good sex education that covers the full range of topics affecting sexual health,” said Carrillo. “At PPSNE, our sex education programs are nonjudgmental. We welcome all youth, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

To commemorate LGBT Pride Month, PPSNE will be participating in the 39th Annual RI PrideFest on June 21, 2014 located at 345 South Water Street, Providence, R.I. and OutCT Pride at the Beach on August 23, 2014 located at 98 Neptune Avenue, New London, Conn. Attendees are welcome to visit our booths in order to receive free condoms, lubricant, educational and informational brochures, fun Planned Parenthood sunglasses and many more fun items.

Planned Parenthood of Southern New England has 18 health centers in Connecticut and Rhode Island and offers a wide variety of preventive health care services. More than 70,000 patients annually depend on PPSNE for quality, affordable, nonjudgmental health care.

Planned Parenthood is a trusted, local resource for convenient and confidential services for women, men, transgender and young people, including hormone therapy, STD/STI testing, HIV testing and counseling and gynecological exams.
