Decline in abortion rate demonstrates value of affordable, accessible birth control in Connecticut, Rhode Island and across the United States.

Planned Parenthood of Southern New England (PPSNE) highlighted the important results of a report issued today by the Guttmacher Institute that shows abortion rates dropped substantially in 2011. The report concludes that access to a range of birth control methods is playing a vital part in the drop.

"Comprehensive sexual health education and access to a range of birth control methods are playing an important role in reducing unintended pregnancy and decreasing the need for abortion," said Jenny Carrillo, Senior Vice President of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. "The Guttmacher report comes as some politicians and corporations are trying to make it harder for women to get birth control by chipping away at the historic benefit in the Affordable Care Act that requires insurance plans to cover birth control without a co-pay."

In Connecticut and Rhode Island, the abortion rates dropped 13 percent between 2008 and 2011. Abortions in southern New England account for less than 2 percent of all abortions in the United States. Nationally, abortion rates dropped 13 percent between 2008 and 2011.

"This report underscores the need for women to have accurate information and access to their full range of options, in consultation with their health care provider; without judgment or political interference," Carrillo said. "Access to birth control is a health care issue, an economic concern, and a matter of basic justice. We know firsthand when a woman has access to birth control, she has the power to plan her family."

Every year, Planned Parenthood of Southern New England health centers provide affordable, confidential, nonjudgmental care to over 70,000 patients, including providing birth control to thousands of Connecticut and Rhode Island patients from all walks of life.
