PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND KICKS OFF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH OF ACTION BY REGISTERING LATINOS TO VOTE IN CONNECTICUT AND RHODE ISLAND
For Immediate Release: Sept. 23, 2016
Planned Parenthood of Southern New England (PPSNE) celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month of Action (September 15 – October 15) by recognizing the pride of the Latinx* community in southern New England and ensuring those who are eligible to vote are registered.
“We are incredibly proud to partner with Voto Latino for Hispanic Heritage Month of Action to ensure Latinos in Connecticut and Rhode Island are registered to vote and have an opportunity to makes their voice heard this election,” said Kafi Rouse, Vice President of Public Relations & Marketing with Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. “At Planned Parenthood, we believe everyone should have the right to vote no matter who they are, where they are from, or what their political beliefs are.”
During Hispanic Heritage Month of Action, Planned Parenthood will be registering members of the Latinx community to vote in Connecticut, Rhode Island and across the country. Through the “My Voice, My Vote” campaign, a nonpartisan voter registration effort, Planned Parenthood is asking people to commit to vote regardless of background, beliefs or political ideology.
According to the Pew Research Center, a record 27.3 million Latinos are projected to be eligible to vote this election. Nearly 20 percent of eligible voters in Connecticut and Rhode Island identify as Latino. Planned Parenthood plans to do its part to ensure Latinos’ voices are heard.
“The Latinx community is one of many disenfranchised groups – including young people, other communities of color, and immigrants, just to name a few – that have had barriers placed in their way to keep them from the polls. These barriers hurt democracy,” said Rouse. “As the largest and most diverse electorate gets ready to vote, it is our responsibility to help ensure that all voices are heard. Latinos are a vital part of the Planned Parenthood community. We are proud to stand with the Latinx community to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to make their voices heard.”
Recognizing the need for technology around voter registration, Planned Parenthood will be utilizing Voto Latino’s VoterPal app to help get members of the Latinx community to vote in a more accessible and efficient manner. Residents in Connecticut and Rhode Island can also register to vote online.
