(New Haven, CT) Below is a statement from Jenny Carrillo Senior Vice President of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England on H 5053 – “Choose Life” License Plate Bill:

“The legislation H 5053, ‘Choose Life’ License Plate Bill was adopted by the House of Representatives and state Senate on July 1, 2013. Through the passing of this bill, funds will be raised by the sale of special-design charity license plates for CareNet Pregnancy Center of RI, an organization which does not provide women with accurate information about all of her pregnancy options. Information should support a woman, help her make a decision for herself and enable her to take care of her health and well-being.

Planned Parenthood of Southern New England is disappointed in the outcome of this vote. Rhode Island should invest in preventive reproductive health services and sex education that further informed decision making. We support state funding for programs and services that respect the deeply personal and often complex medical decisions a woman makes regarding her pregnancy. I don’t believe you can make those decisions for someone else. Ultimately, decisions must be left to a woman, her family, and her faith, with the counsel of her health care providers.”

###

Planned Parenthood of Southern New England (PPSNE) is one of the region’s largest providers of family planning and reproductive health care services. Since 1923, PPSNE has evolved into an organization with 18 health centers in Connecticut and Rhode Island, delivering care to nearly 70,000 patients annually, and 90 percent of the services provided are preventive.
