Sedation Services

As of August 2024, we are offering sedation for some services.

You Asked. We Listened.

In addition to offering sedation for abortion, we now offer patients the option for sedation during long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) placements, colposcopies, and loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEPs) at some of our locations.

Everyone's body is different.

Many people tolerate these visits well without the need for sedation. However, you may wish to be sedated if one or more of the following applies to you:

  • You think of yourself as having a "low pain tolerance
  • You are prone to anxiety
  • You have a history of fainting
  • You have any history of sexual trauma
  • You have previously experienced discomfort with a similar procedure
  • You experience a lot of discomfort during your Pap tests

Sedation is a safe and effective way to minimize your anxiety or discomfort during an LARC placement, colposcopy, or LEEP.

Requesting Sedation

Sedation is only available at our East Orlando, North Tampa, Sarasota, and Fort Myers health centers.

  • To request sedation for an LARC placement (IUD or implant): Schedule a birth control management appointment online or by telephone. During your visit, please ask your clinician about sedation.
  • To request sedation for a colposcopy or LEEP: Please ask about sedation when your colposcopy or LEEP procedure is being scheduled.

frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of sedation?

The primary benefits of sedation are to help calm and relax patients or make them more comfortable before and during in-office procedures.

How is sedation administered?

The medication is given intravenously (IV). You will be closely monitored by a nurse.

What are the risks of sedation?

All patients are pre-screened to ensure they are appropriate candidates. While highly unlikely, there is a small risk of respiratory depression (when you breathe too slowly or shallowly, preventing proper gas exchange in your lungs) and allergic reaction to medications. You will be closely monitored while sedated to ensure that everything is going well and you are not having negative reactions.

What does moderate sedation feel like?

Patients feel drowsy and sleepy for about 30 minutes but are able to walk independently out of the recovery room after that time.

Are you awake, or asleep with moderate sedation?

You will be awake, breathing on your own, but resting comfortably.

Can I drive after sedation?

No. You should not drive after sedation and will need to arrange a ride home from a responsible support person, public transportation or ride sharing (Uber or Lyft) if you choose this option
